Population healthiness INDEX℠ (PHI, Φ)

A Game Changer in Healthcare

Introducing Population Healthiness Index℠ (PHI, Φ)

Population Healthiness Index℠ (PHI, Φ) is an elegantly simple and easy to understand tool that captures, analyzes, interconnects and calculates the ΦScore℠, the SINGLE number that represents the health and vitality of the Whole Person.
(see graphic).

Inspired by the mathematical expression the Golden Ratio, represented by the Greek letter Φ, the perfect proportionality found in the universe including humans, animals, plants, DNA, arts, music, architecture, theology etc., the ΦScore℠ is modeled for the Whole Person to achieve the "Golden Healthiness" in individuals and populations of any shape or size.

ΦScore℠  interconnects and measures the impact of the following 11

ΦDimensions℠ consisting of over 50 ΦFactors℠ representing the Whole Person (see graphic):

ΦBehaviors℠ - Behaviors and lifestyles that impact health and vitality

ΦConditions℠ - Clinical conditions. diseases and risk factors
ΦConnections℠ - Belongings to groups and support systems
ΦCost℠ - Impact on healthcare cost
ΦFunctionality℠ - Essential daily living functions

ΦHabits℠ - Entrenched habits that influence healthiness

ΦOutlook℠ - Attitude toward health, life etc.
ΦPhysique℠ - Physical structure and its maintenance

ΦProductivity℠ - Impact on lost productivity and its cost

ΦStress℠ - Stress drivers and their management including spirituality
ΦWork-life℠ - Satisfaction with the work environment

The Need for PHI (Φ)

The Trillion-Dollar Challenge

Lack of a single measure for the overall health and vitality of the Whole Person is the most important reason for inefficiency and complexity in the current healthcare system resulting in huge waste, estimated to be a trillion dollars each year in the U.S. alone.

Clinical Silos

Treating an individual as a patchwork of “clinical silos” rather than as an interconnected whole has led to myriad outcome measures supported by a confounding number of unique and proprietary tools, procedures, methods, models etc., making the current healthcare system incredibly complex losing focus on the overall health and vitality of the care recipient.

Abuse, Misuse and Overuse

This absence of a holistic measure prevents in building consistency of care delivered - efficiency, efficacy, and experience; an underlying reason for perpetuation of the transactional “fee for service” culture, that in turn drives abuse, misuse and overuse of the healthcare resources.

The 5000 Hours Dilemma

It is estimated that a patient spends 5000 hours a year on their own away from a physician or care giver.  During that period, the patient's lifestyle, behaviors such as medication adherence, and other dimensions and factors of daily living have profound bearing on their disease management and the efficacy of the care that a physician has prescribed.

This lack of understanding of the Whole Person (see graphic), with multiple clinical and non clinical factors and dimensions that can influence the health and vitality of a patient is a significant handicap to the current healthcare system.

Why PHI (Φ)?

Universal Application

  • PHI (Φ) is a universally applicable tool for individuals such as patients and consumers as well as their aggregation into populations of any size and shape. Examples of population may include employers, organizations, networks, communities, customized populations by disease, demography etc.

Easy to Understand and Engage

  • SINGLE measure cuts through the complexity and confusion caused by multiple, non-integrated measures.
  • PHI's ((Φ) multi-dimensional view engages and motivates individuals and populations in the betterment of their health and vitality.

Focused and Measurable Population Improvement Targets

  • Develop pin-point strategies for health and vitality improvement of populations segmented by over 50 influencing factors.
  • Optimize resources to improve health, cost, productivity and overall vitality.
  • Real time tracking of the key vitality measures with every change in the ΦScore℠ point.
  • Deliver disproportionate returns on investment faster.

Flexible & Customizable for Performance Management

PHI (Φ) can be customized to highlight certain clinical and non-clinical dimensions to measure the effectiveness of a wide variety of applications such as drugs, procedures, therapies, treatments, programs, interventions or delivery systems:

  • Health and Wellness Improvement: ΦScore℠ can be used to maximize the impact of wellness programs in increasing the health and vitality of specific populations by finely focusing strategies  to optimize critical factors and dimensions. Pre-set targets and real time impact of programs on critical measures such as productivity and cost is tracked and fed back for continuous improvement.
  • Surgical Procedures: To measure the pre and post effectiveness for, say an orthopedic procedure, dimensions  such as Functionality, Conditions and Productivity may have higher emphasis with customized targets for improvement in the ΦScore℠ measurement.
  • Treatments: For the measurement of the treatment effectiveness, for example, the diabetics, Physique, Conditions and Behavior factors such as Physical Activities and Medication Adherence may have greater prominence in setting targets and their measurement in the ΦScore℠.
  • Drug Effectiveness:  For a cancer drug, the end points or expected outcomes may include the key dimension such as Physique, Conditions, Behaviors, Stress and Functionality to measure the overall effectiveness of the therapy.
